Arranging for the Small Jazz Ensemble presents an innovative approach to the challenging subject of jazz arranging. The author, Robert Larson, has narrowed down the choices of instrumentation and texture in such a way that anyone from a novice jazz enthusiast to a seasoned professional can learn how to arrange jazz standards and originals in a relatively short period of time. Four original jazz tunes are used throughout the book to demonstrate texture, instrumentation, introductions, endings, interludes, solo backgrounds, solis, and shout choruses. Each chapter contains exercises that give the reader a chance to practice the techniques learned in that chapter. By the end of the study, the reader will be equipped to create a complete jazz arrangement. With everything you need here in one book, why aren't you Arranging for the Small Jazz Ensemble?

Arranging for the Small Jazz Ensemble A StepByStep Guide with Practical Exercises and Recorded Examples edition by Robert Larson Arts Photography eBooks

To begin with: I'm dealing with the Kindle version, I'm an amateur musician but not a jazz player, I'm using this book for self-instruction, and I've worked about halfway through it at this point. Having it on Kindle is very useful-- lets you read while out and use Kindle for Mac doing the homework at home (in conjunction with the free scoring software MuseScore.) This format is also easily searchable, of course, but I find myself wishing for a glossary and/or a more detailed table of contents or index. The writing and explanations are generally very clear to a beginner, but there are places where the technical intensity jumps to a much higher level. The online resources are very useful and the exercises well-designed and fun to do. I suppose, the book having been designed as a textbook, it wouldn't really do to publish the answers/solutions online too, but I'm frequently left wondering if I've done things right— that is, what's my grade?

Arranging for the Small Jazz Ensemble A StepByStep Guide with Practical Exercises and Recorded Examples edition by Robert Larson Arts Photography eBooks Reviews

This book is excellent and very clear. It describes the whole process of putting an arrangement together, from an initial "sketch" through to a completed full chart. Along the way there is a good treatment of writing for various numbers of voices and in different combinations, a discussion of the various common jazz instruments. Also there are sections on introductions and endings, rhythm section, and so on.

There are exercises to be completed for each chapter, and well recorded examples which are available online. If you work through the text at the piano, and try the exercises you should end up with a good grounding in the work of arranging.

The style of the examples in the book leans towards a 1950s or perhaps more contemporary ensemble, and the instrumentation dealt with is exclusively brass and saxes (as well as rhythm section). Other possible lead instruments such as clarinet or violin are not dealt with. If you are interested in creating a sound reminiscent of another period, you will need to adapt. However, that could likely be said of any work on this subject.

I use this book and Mancini's work on arranging for reference and study. Mancini's book deals with a broader range of instrumentation (it is not dedicated to jazz groups) and has some excellent examples of writing in different styles. However if does not deal with the process of planning an arrangement, or the complexities of harmonic theory, at all, and, of course, there are no recordings of the examples online. I find the two books to be an excellent complement to each other.

When I have had questions, I have contacted the author via his website, and received a very speedy and very helpful reply. An added bonus.

Highly recommended to any serious student.
Arranging for the Small Jazz Ensemble by Robert Larson

Highly recommended!

This is a great step-by-step self-study book on how to arrange music for the small jazz ensemble - complete with written and audio examples, arranging assignments for each concept as you learn that build your skills step-by-step as you progress through the manual.

Mr. Larson provides you with three compositions in different styles and tempo to give you music to arrange in the various lesson assignments. Each of them has different arranging challenges for you to learn from to build your experience and understanding of what works and what doesn't work too.

The book is laid out nicely with each section introducing knowledge you need to know in making decisions in your arranging projects, such as three basic song forms, instrumental textures, and basis arranging structures. He gives you what you need to know to get writing for trumpet, trombone, and the saxophones too - plus the rhythm section of piano, bass, and drums ... including their ranges and also tips on what stylistically works well on the various horns and rhythm instruments. This will save you a lot of grief when you hand out the parts for your players to play.

His section on jazz harmony and voicings is a wonderfully concise approach to music theory for immediate application to your needs as an arranger for the small jazz group, with practical information on tertiary and quartal harmony, and dealing with non-harmonic tones as well.

One of the greatest benefits of the book is how he has emphasized planning out the form and texture of an arrangement before writing any notes ... that helps the new arranger terrifically!!!

He gives you lots of ideas in approaching 2-part, 3-part, and 4-part writing and mixing them into your charts, plus provides an often overlooked discussion of writing various types of introductions and endings to your arrangements - great beginnings and endings can really add to the overall success of an arrangement.

The downloadable MP3 audio examples are professionally recorded and played (real instruments and players) so you can see the music and hear what the samples really sound like, plus he has provided more explanation and training in the videos that are on his website. I especially like the sample he provides in example 12.6 ... the writing gives that tune a LOT of forward momentum, you'll see and hear what I mean when you get your copy.

If you're wanting a clear, concise, step-by-step guide to learning the practical things you need to know to write for a small jazz ensemble (and to make it sound big!), get a copy of this book, go through it section after section, and keep it within reach as a ready reference too. You will be happy that you did for years to come.
